Lovely to see so many of you there for our June meeting.
Mary Dearden gave a lovely talk on all things lavender and even had some goodies
to sell after we had planted our lavender cuttings. I don’t know if everyone
tried the lavender biscuits she had made but they were delicious so I am putting
the recipe below.
The business side of the meeting was good as well with lots of
suggestions of local charities that we could support; we will check with head
office as to whether we are allowed to support them and then next month those
that proposed the charities can tell us about them (very briefly) and then we
can discuss what fund raising we could undertake.
I would also like to tell you about a project I am thinking about
at the moment, more to do with raising awareness than fundraising but certainly
something worthwhile that we could all get involved in. It stems from Central
Liverpool WI’s involvement with the bees on the roof of Blackburne House and
ties in with the WI’s campaign for pollinators. I was driving down Aigburth Rd a
few months ago and noticed that the council had left patches in the middle verge
unmowed and they were covered with crocus, dandelion and daisy, all fantastic
food sources for bees. There are so many large areas of grassland in the city
such as the Cathedral, school playing fields and parks that are considered
sterile as far as pollinators are concerned because they are mown so short. I
was hoping to contact the wildflower centre in Court Hey Park and ask them if
they could suggest mowing regimes for different types of grassland which we
could then try and persuade the various land owners to adopt as not only would
they be doing their bit for the environment but they may also save money by
reduced mowing.
Anyway you can let me know what you think next
month when we are doing the town trail, meet at Blackburne House as usual.
